Cold Cat? 8 Tips to Keep Your Cat Warm This Winter

Is your cat glued to the heater, sneaking under the covers or sleeping in a tight little ball? When the cold arrives, many cats seek out warmth. That's normal: their body temperature is higher than ours, and they spend energy keeping it up.

Which cats feel the cold most?

  • Kittens, who can't regulate their temperature well yet.
  • Senior cats, often less active and sometimes stiff in the joints.
  • Short-haired or hairless cats (Sphynx, Devon Rex…).
  • Thin or recovering cats.

8 tips for a warm, cozy winter

1. Get a self-warming pad

It's the simplest, safest solution. A self-warming pad has a heat-reflecting layer that sends your cat's natural warmth back to them, with no electricity: no cord, no risk of overheating.

2. Raise their bed

Cold comes up from the floor. A bed on a piece of furniture, an armchair or a sunny window hammock will always be warmer than a cushion on bare tile.

3. Make the most of winter sun

Even in winter, a ray of sunshine through a window is a real source of warmth. Cats know this very well!

4. Keep beds away from drafts

Avoid entryways, poorly insulated windows and doors that open often.

5. Offer cozy hideaways

Covered beds, igloos, a cardboard box with a blanket: enclosed spaces hold heat better and make your cat feel safe.

6. Watch out for dangerous heat sources

Hot radiators, stoves, fireplaces, overly hot water bottles: add protection and never leave your cat unsupervised near a flame.

7. Keep them active

Play warms them up! A few minutes chasing an interactive ball or a feather wand raises their temperature and fights winter inactivity.

8. Take care of their coat

A clean, tangle-free coat insulates better. Regular brushing, for example with a gentle steam brush, helps maintain that natural insulation.

If your senior cat seems stiff or in pain in cold weather, talk to your vet.
